4 Things a Guitar Lesson DVD Must Have
Learning to play guitar is a very satisfying experience. Partially because you’ll be able to play your favorite songs, but more so because you’ll go from nothing to making wonderful music with your instrument.
Home study guitar courses have been around for some time, but never have they been as advanced as today. Guitar lesson dvds have taken learning guitar at home to a whole new level, one that almost replaces private instructors.
Better then Private Guitar Lessons find out why now.
Key features of Guitar Lesson dvd packages
There are several guitar lessons dvd products available, and like most things some are better then others. I’ve put together a list of what you should look for before purchasing any guitar lessons on dvd.
Any course should:
- Cover a variety of topics (theory, chords, scales) in a logical order
- Include Printed material that supports the lessons for practice and reference
- Jam Along CD’s or files so you can practice what you learn in a band type setting
- Include after sales support you can ask questions to in case you get stuck

I’ll expand on each one of these points :
Multiple lessons/Variety of Topics: A better way to describe this might be a logical lesson sequence. Many inexpensive learn to play guitar products have a lot of content with them, but if you’re new to guitar you might feel over whelmed with what to do first, and how to proceed.
A good learn guitar dvd will be organized into a straight forward lesson plan format. The same way a private instructor would teach you. This ensures you learn what you need to know in a logical format, and each lesson builds on the next.

Printed Material: If you take private or group guitar lessons chances are the instructor will tell you to purchase a particular instruction book. This book will serve as follow up to the lessons they teach you, and also as a practice guide.
Most people enjoy learning by watching something. This is why guitar lessons on dvd are popular. How ever the supplemental material (music, tab, chord charts) provided in printed instruction books is an excellent reference point for review and practicing. Any good home study guitar course will provide you with video and printed instruction.

Jam Along Discs: This isn’t a MUST have but it helps a lot so that you can gauge how well your progressing. If you want to learn how to play lead guitar, then being able to practice with someone else is ideal, but not always possible. If the beginner guitar dvd kit you purchase comes with Jam along cd’s all the better. You’ll be able to learn not just how to play on your own but also with others much quicker.

After Sales Support: This is often an over looked item when beginner guitar players are looking for a do-it-yourself guitar course. There are many online music stores that sell guitar instruction dvds. How ever once you’ve bought them that’s it. If you have a question you cannot ask the teacher, or call the store. If you can find a dvd course that will also provide support for the lessons after purchase that’s the next best thing to taking private lessons.
You get the best of both worlds, learning in your own home, and having the ability to contact a professional instructor should you have any problems. I’ve found a course that offers this, and it’s the first of it’s kind I think, I’ll tell you about it a little later on.
What should it cost?
For most beginner and intermediate guitar players a program that covers all of these points mentioned will run you between $150-$300. It seems like a lot of money, but compared to what guitar lessons cost you’ll receive a lot more content for the money.
Things to watch out for in less expensive guitar lesson packages are:
- No musical theory lessons
- Lack of lesson depth (focuses on just teaching you how to do one thing i.e. Strum chords)
- Doesn’t leave you with any further direction after the lessons are complete
- Lack of structure to the over all package (no real lesson plan, or path to build on)
I’ve found that less expensive “learn to play guitar†packages (more specifically those that you can download off the Internet) don’t have the same substance as DVD home study courses.
If you want to learn:
- how to read music
- how to play lead guitar/scales
- advanced chord progressions
- develop the ability to write your own songs and music
Then I wouldn’t waste any time on cheap “LEARN FAST†guitar products. You’ll find that the sales letters for these types of products preach fast results, how ever the guitar is an instrument that cannot be learned over night. Most of what these products preach is hype, and they rarely can deliver on it.
I found a program a few months ago that encompasses all the items I talked about above, and avoids the pitfalls of poorly structured learn to play guitar programs. If you’d like to learn a bit more about the program I found you can visit their website here, the product is called Learn and master guitar.
