It wasn’t that long ago that VHS cassettes were still out selling dvds. At that point in time learn at home video instruction wasn’t as popular as it is today. My guess is because dvds have made it a lot easier to navigate lessons, and provide more information for less money.
Guitar instructional dvds are no different, there popularity has grown. If you’ve been in your local music store to take a peek you’ve probably seen at least a half a dozen different guitar lesson videos. Let me give you a piece of advice, don’t buy one of those dvds from your local music store. Why? Because you will likely be disappointed with the content included.
Before buying a guitar instruction dvd here are the things you should check for:
Does the dvd have:
- Printed material to support the video lessons
- A long term lesson plan to provide you with a year or more worth of lessons
- After sales support, whether it be online or by telephone to ask questions if you get stuck
Learn and Master Guitar offers all these features and more
Most of the $30-$40 dvds you can purchase at music stores don’t give you the three things mentioned above. Most will get you off the ground with guitar, but leave you looking for another dvd or private lessons once you’re done with it.
If you’re not a beginner player, then you’ll probably find that those guitar instruction dvds only provide you with a month or two worth of content to work on. This isn’t to say that there is anything wrong with your local music store. They sell quality instruments, and probably a lot of them, but let them do that. They can sell the guitars let the instructors sell lessons.
Where should you look for Guitar instruction on dvd?
Thanks to technological advances the Internet has allowed instructors to start producing their own guitar instructional dvds. It’s made if cost effective that a professional guitar teacher can create their own dvd or online video lessons and provide it to the masses by selling it on the Internet.
The above points I listed should still hold true. Don’t purchase any guitar dvd instruction that doesn’t offer some form of supplemental learning manual or lesson book, and at the very least provide an email address where you can ask questions if you get stuck.
The support part is most important to me. This is what makes a home study course a substitute for private lessons. If you can get your questions answered about what your learning, without having to leave home then you’ve brought the instructor to you.
I’ve been using a guitar instruction course called Learn and Master guitar, it comes with a variety of dvds that have over a years worth of instruction on them. Also the product has a private members forum where you can ask questions to the instructor, based on which lesson your studying.
They’re the most comprehensive guitar instructional dvds I’ve found online or offline. You can read more about Learn and Master Guitar here in my review.
